Health insurance Sarasota at a glance
Sarasota is the county seat of Sarasota County. According to U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts, the city has about 58,458 residents (2025 estimate), and 29.2% of city residents are 65 or older. Across Sarasota County the share is even higher, at 38.8%.
The same Census data shows a gap for younger residents: about 21.2% of people under 65 in the city of Sarasota have no health insurance, compared with 13.1% countywide. If you are one of them, the Marketplace is where individual and family coverage is sold, and Florida does not run its own exchange. Our Florida health insurance guide covers the statewide rules; this page focuses on what changes for people who live here.
Early retirees: bridging the years before Medicare
Many people move to Sarasota or retire here before 65, and that leaves a gap: employer coverage ends, but Medicare has not started. A Marketplace plan is designed to fill exactly that gap. Insurers cannot turn you down or charge more because of a pre-existing condition, which matters a great deal in your late 50s and early 60s.
Two things change the math for early retirees. First, the subsidy is based on your estimated 2027 household income, not your savings. Retirement account withdrawals, pensions, and Social Security count as income in specific ways, so planning which account you draw from can change your tax credit. Second, ACA premiums rise with age, so the subsidy usually matters more to a 62-year-old than a 30-year-old.
The 400% “subsidy cliff” is back for 2027. A couple earning more than about $86,560 gets no premium tax credit at all, so a modest income adjustment can be worth a careful look before you apply. Compare options in our guide to affordable health insurance in Florida.
Turning 65 while on a Marketplace plan
For health insurance, Sarasota residents near 65 most often ask about the handoff from Marketplace coverage to Medicare. Your Medicare Initial Enrollment Period is seven months long: it starts three months before the month you turn 65 and ends three months after, according to Medicare.gov.
Your Marketplace plan does not end on its own when Medicare starts. You have to cancel it, ideally timed so the two overlap by zero days. Once you qualify for premium-free Medicare Part A, you can no longer get a premium tax credit for a Marketplace plan, so keeping both can mean paying full price. HealthCare.gov explains the steps.
- Mark your 65th birthday month and the three months before it.
- Sign up for Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period to avoid late penalties.
- Pick a Medicare start date, then end your Marketplace plan the day before it.
- Keep a younger spouse covered. If your spouse is under 65, they can stay on a Marketplace plan and may still qualify for help.

Hospitals and networks in Sarasota County
The biggest health care name in town is Sarasota Memorial Health Care System. It is a public system overseen by the nine-member Sarasota County Public Hospital Board, whose members are elected by county voters, according to Sarasota Memorial. Its campuses include the flagship hospital in Sarasota and Sarasota Memorial Hospital-Venice, with a North Port hospital planned.
Being a public hospital does not mean every health insurance Sarasota plan includes it. Each Marketplace plan has its own network, and networks can change from one year to the next. Before you choose a 2027 plan, check three things:
- Your doctors, including any specialist you see regularly.
- Your hospital, especially if you have planned surgery or ongoing treatment.
- Your prescriptions, using each plan’s drug list.
Carriers and networks vary by county, and 2027 plan details for Sarasota County are still being finalized. Compare every option on HealthCare.gov or with Honesty rather than assuming last year’s plan still fits. Our guide on how to choose a health plan walks through the trade-offs.
2027 subsidies for Sarasota households
The enhanced premium tax credits that ran from 2021 through 2025 expired on December 31, 2025. Help still exists under the original ACA rules, but it is smaller, and insurers nationally proposed a median 15% increase for 2027, according to KFF.
Because Florida did not expand Medicaid, subsidies for the health insurance Sarasota residents buy start at 100% of the federal poverty level. For 2027 coverage, the benchmark silver plan costs you a set share of income, from 2.15% at the low end to 10.22% for households between 300% and 400% of poverty.
| Household size | 100% FPL (subsidy floor in FL) | 400% FPL (subsidy cliff) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 person | $15,960 | $63,840 |
| 2 people | $21,640 | $86,560 |
| 3 people | $27,320 | $109,280 |
| 4 people | $33,000 | $132,000 |
Income limits use the 2026 HHS poverty guidelines, which apply to 2027 coverage. Out-of-pocket maximums for 2027 are capped at $12,000 for an individual and $24,000 for a family. See the full breakdown in 2027 health insurance subsidies.
Self-employed and small-business owners
Sarasota County had 59,161 nonemployer businesses in 2024, per Census QuickFacts. These are businesses with no paid employees, such as consultants, contractors, real estate agents, and freelancers. If that describes you, there is no employer plan to fall back on, and your income can swing from year to year.
For health insurance, Sarasota freelancers should estimate 2027 net self-employment income, not gross receipts. If your income changes during the year, update your Marketplace application so your tax credit stays accurate and you are not surprised when you file your 2027 return in 2028.
After a storm: Hurricane Milton and Special Enrollment
Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key in Sarasota County on October 9, 2024, as a Category 3 storm, according to the National Hurricane Center. Storms like that can cost people jobs, homes, and health insurance. Sarasota residents should know the enrollment rules before the next one.
If a FEMA-declared disaster in your county kept you from enrolling, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. HealthCare.gov says you have 60 days from the end of the FEMA incident period to enroll. Losing job-based coverage or moving to a new address can also open a 60-day window.
Storm-season tip: Save a photo of your insurance card, your plan ID, and your insurer’s phone number on your phone. If you evacuate, you can still fill prescriptions and find in-network care.
Free local help and clinics in Sarasota
You do not have to sort out your health insurance. Sarasota County has verified local resources, plus federal tools that list in-person help near you.
| Resource | What it does |
|---|---|
| Florida Department of Health in Sarasota County | County public health services from its main office at 2200 Ringling Blvd |
| CenterPlace Health | Community health center with four Sarasota County locations; income-based reduced rates for uninsured patients who qualify |
| localhelp.healthcare.gov | Find Navigators and certified assisters by ZIP code |
| Florida KidCare | Coverage for children under 19 |
| ACCESS Florida | Apply for Florida Medicaid through DCF |
Florida has not expanded Medicaid, so adults below 100% of poverty with no other eligibility can fall into the coverage gap. Children usually have a path through KidCare even when parents do not qualify for Medicaid.

Frequently asked questions
Where do I buy health insurance in Sarasota, FL?
Individual and family plans in Sarasota are sold through the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov, because Florida does not run its own exchange. You can apply directly or with a licensed helper such as Honesty, and the price for the same plan is the same either way.
I retired early in Sarasota. Can I get a subsidy?
Often, yes. Subsidies for 2027 are based on your estimated 2027 household income, not your savings. A couple earning more than about $86,560 (400% of the poverty level) gets no premium tax credit, so how you draw retirement income can make a real difference.
What happens to my Marketplace plan when I turn 65?
It does not end automatically. Sign up for Medicare during your seven-month Initial Enrollment Period, then cancel your Marketplace plan so it ends the day before Medicare starts. Once you qualify for premium-free Part A, you cannot keep a premium tax credit.
Do all plans include Sarasota Memorial?
Not necessarily. Each Marketplace plan has its own network, and networks can change each year. Check that your doctors, hospital, and prescriptions are covered by any 2027 plan before you enroll.
Can I enroll late if a hurricane disrupted Open Enrollment?
Possibly. If you live in a county with a FEMA disaster declaration and the storm kept you from enrolling, HealthCare.gov allows 60 days from the end of the FEMA incident period to enroll. Losing coverage or moving can also open a Special Enrollment Period.
When is the deadline for 2027 coverage in Sarasota?
Open Enrollment runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Enroll by December 15, 2026 for coverage that starts January 1, 2027. Enrolling December 16 through January 15 starts coverage February 1.
