Health insurance Cape Coral families buy on their own is sold through the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov. For 2027 coverage, Open Enrollment runs Nov 1, 2026 – Jan 15, 2027, and you must enroll by Dec 15 to be covered Jan 1. Kids may qualify for Florida KidCare, and newcomers who just moved here may not need to wait for Open Enrollment.

Health insurance Cape Coral: why the city is different
Cape Coral is the largest city in Lee County. U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts estimates 236,264 residents in 2025, more than twice the population of Fort Myers next door. The city grew from about 194,000 people at the April 2020 Census base, so a lot of households here are relatively new to the area.
The mix is broad: 25.0% of residents are 65 or older, but the city also has a large share of working-age families. About 15.3% of residents under 65 have no health insurance, according to Census QuickFacts. For health insurance, Cape Coral households are usually shopping for one of three things: a first plan after a move, family coverage without an employer plan, or a bridge to Medicare.
Florida runs no exchange of its own, so all of it goes through HealthCare.gov or a licensed helper. Our Florida health insurance guide explains the statewide rules.
Just moved to Cape Coral? Your enrollment window
A permanent move to a new ZIP code can open a Special Enrollment Period, so you may not have to wait until November. In most cases you have 60 days from the move to pick a Marketplace plan. There is one catch: you generally need to have had qualifying health coverage for at least one day in the 60 days before you moved, according to HealthCare.gov.
- Moving from another state? Your old plan’s network almost certainly does not extend to Southwest Florida. Shop for a new plan right away.
- Moving within Florida? Plans and networks change by county, so a plan from Miami-Dade or Orlando may not be the best fit in Lee County.
- Moving in during fall? If you arrive near Open Enrollment, the simplest path is enrolling between Nov 1 and Dec 15 for a Jan 1, 2027 start.

Family coverage and Florida KidCare
For young families, the best health insurance Cape Coral parents can find often splits the household: the parents on a subsidized Marketplace plan and the children on Florida KidCare. Florida KidCare covers children under 19 and includes Medicaid for children, MediKids, and Florida Healthy Kids. When you apply on the Marketplace, children are screened for KidCare automatically.
Parents face tighter rules. Florida has not expanded Medicaid, so most adults without a disability qualify only at very low incomes. Adults below 100% of the poverty level who have no other path can land in the coverage gap. You can apply for Florida Medicaid through ACCESS Florida.
Family tip: Young adults can stay on a parent’s plan until 26. If your college student lives outside Lee County, check that your plan’s network covers care where they actually live.

Cape Coral Hospital and your network
The city’s main hospital is Cape Coral Hospital, a 303-bed hospital run by Lee Health, a nonprofit system that operates primarily in Lee County. Lee Health also runs Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida and several hospitals across the river in Fort Myers.
Networks are the part of health insurance Cape Coral shoppers most often overlook. Lee Health has posted that its hospitals and physicians will be out of network with UnitedHealthcare starting January 1, 2027 for affected employer, individual, and Medicare Advantage plans, and that UnitedHealthcare’s Marketplace plans do not currently include Lee Health, per its patient notice. That is a network fact, not a rating of any insurer, but it shows why you should never assume.
- Search each plan’s directory for your primary doctor and any specialist.
- Confirm your hospital, including where you would want to give birth or have surgery.
- Check your prescriptions on each plan’s drug list.
- Call the plan if the directory is unclear. Directories are not always current.
Carriers and networks vary by county, and 2027 plan details are still being finalized. Compare every option on HealthCare.gov or with Honesty. Our guide on how to choose a health plan can help.
Hurricane Ian lessons and disaster enrollment
Hurricane Ian made landfall in southwestern Florida on September 28, 2022, as a Category 4 storm, coming ashore near Cayo Costa in Lee County. The National Hurricane Center calls it the costliest hurricane in Florida’s history. For a city with more than 400 miles of freshwater and saltwater canals, as the City of Cape Coral describes it, storm planning is part of life.
Your storm plan should include your health insurance. Cape Coral residents who were kept from enrolling by a FEMA-declared disaster in their county get 60 days from the end of the FEMA incident period to enroll, under HealthCare.gov rules. Losing a job and its health plan after a storm also opens a 60-day window.
Before the next storm: Photograph each family member’s insurance card and save your plan’s member services number in your phone. If your home is damaged and you relocate, report the new address to the Marketplace so your coverage and tax credit stay correct.
What your income means for 2027 subsidies
Subsidies for 2027 coverage are based on your estimated 2027 household income. The enhanced tax credits from 2021 through 2025 expired at the end of 2025, so help is smaller, and the 400% “subsidy cliff” is back. Insurers nationally proposed a median 15% increase for 2027, per KFF.
| Family size | Subsidy starts in FL (100% FPL) | Subsidy ends (400% FPL) |
|---|---|---|
| 2 people | $21,640 | $86,560 |
| 3 people | $27,320 | $109,280 |
| 4 people | $33,000 | $132,000 |
For 2027, the benchmark silver plan costs eligible households between 2.15% and 10.22% of income, and silver plans carry extra cost-sharing help up to 250% of poverty. The 2027 out-of-pocket maximum is $12,000 for one person and $24,000 for a family. Details are in 2027 health insurance subsidies.
Clinics and in-person help in Cape Coral
If you are between plans or still waiting on health insurance, Cape Coral has community clinics. It serves patients regardless of ability to pay.

Frequently asked questions
I just moved to Cape Coral. Do I have to wait for Open Enrollment?
Usually not. A permanent move can open a 60-day Special Enrollment Period, as long as you had qualifying coverage for at least one day in the 60 days before the move. If you arrive close to fall, you can also enroll during Open Enrollment, November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027.
Can my kids get coverage if my spouse and I buy a Marketplace plan?
Yes. Children under 19 may qualify for Florida KidCare even when parents do not qualify for Medicaid. When you apply on the Marketplace, your children are screened for KidCare automatically.
Is Cape Coral Hospital in every plan’s network?
No. Cape Coral Hospital is part of Lee Health, and each plan sets its own network. Lee Health has said it will be out of network with UnitedHealthcare starting January 1, 2027. Check every 2027 plan’s directory for your doctors and hospital before you enroll.
What if a hurricane stops me from enrolling on time?
If your county has a FEMA disaster declaration and the storm kept you from enrolling, HealthCare.gov allows 60 days from the end of the FEMA incident period to enroll. Losing job-based coverage after a storm also opens a 60-day Special Enrollment Period.
When do I need to enroll for coverage on January 1, 2027?
Enroll by December 15, 2026. Open Enrollment continues through January 15, 2027, but plans chosen after December 15 start February 1, 2027.
