Health Insurance Quotes: How to Get Accurate 2027 Quotes Without the Spam Calls

Health insurance quotes are estimates of what a specific plan will cost you each month, based on your ZIP code, the ages of the people covered, tobacco use and household income. A quote becomes your real price only after you apply, because premium tax credits, plan availability and household details are confirmed during the application.

Updated October 2026 for the 2027 plan year

Key facts (2027 plan year)

  • Open Enrollment for 2027 coverage on HealthCare.gov runs November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027; enroll by December 15, 2026 for coverage starting January 1 (HealthCare.gov).
  • Under the Affordable Care Act, only five things can change an individual plan’s premium: where you live, age, tobacco use, plan category and whether family members are covered (HealthCare.gov).
  • Insurers can charge older adults up to 3 times what younger adults pay, and tobacco users up to 50% more (CMS market rating reforms).
  • Your health, medical history and sex can’t change an ACA plan’s premium (HealthCare.gov).
  • Premium tax credits for 2027 are limited to households between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level, and you pay 2.15% to 10.22% of income for the benchmark silver plan (IRS Rev. Proc. 2026-26; see our 2027 subsidy guide).
  • Starting with tax year 2026, there is no cap on repaying excess advance premium tax credits, so an accurate income estimate in your quote matters more than ever (IRS).

What is a health insurance quote?

A health insurance quote is a price estimate for a specific plan, for specific people, in a specific place. It shows the monthly premium and, on a good quote, the deductible, copays and out-of-pocket maximum too.

A quote is not a bill or a promise. It is a snapshot built from the details you typed in. If one of those details changes, or the Marketplace confirms a different income, the number changes too.

There are two kinds of quotes. A preview quote uses a few basic answers and shows estimated prices. An application quote comes after you complete the full application, and HealthCare.gov says that is when you get exact prices.

The premium is only one part of what you pay. To understand the other numbers on a quote, see how health insurance works and our guide to deductibles vs. out-of-pocket maximums.

What do you need to get a health insurance quote?

To get accurate health insurance quotes you need five things: your ZIP code, the age of everyone who needs coverage, whether anyone uses tobacco, your household size and your expected income for the coverage year. Your doctors and prescriptions turn a price quote into a real comparison.

The details that set the price

  • ZIP code (and sometimes county). Plans and prices are set by rating area, so two towns a few miles apart can see different plans.
  • Ages. Premiums rise with age. Each person on the plan is priced at their own age.
  • Tobacco use. Answer honestly. A tobacco surcharge can apply, and a wrong answer can cause problems later.
  • Who is in your household. For Marketplace savings, your household is usually the tax filer, a spouse and tax dependents, even people who don’t need coverage (HealthCare.gov household rules).
  • Expected 2027 income. Savings for 2027 coverage are based on your estimated 2027 household income, not last year’s.

The details that make a quote useful

  • Doctors and hospitals you want to keep, so you can check each plan’s network.
  • Prescriptions with dose, so you can check each plan’s drug list (formulary) and tier.
  • Expected care for the year: a planned surgery, a pregnancy, therapy, or ongoing visits.
  • Any job-based coverage offer in the household, because an affordable offer can affect subsidy eligibility.

Tip: Have last year’s tax return, recent pay stubs or 1099s, and a list of medicines open while you quote. It takes five minutes and saves you from re-quoting later.

Why do online health insurance quotes differ from the final price?

Online quotes differ from the final price because they are built on estimates. The biggest swings come from the premium tax credit, from age and tobacco details, and from quote sites that show prices before checking which plans are actually available at your address.

1. The subsidy is estimated, then confirmed

Most Marketplace shoppers pay less than the full premium because of the premium tax credit. A preview applies a credit based on the income you guessed. The application then checks your household and income, and the credit can go up or down.

For 2027 the enhanced credits are gone and the 400% FPL cliff is back. Above 400% of the federal poverty level there is no credit at all. For a household of one that line is $63,840, and for four it is $132,000 (2026 HHS poverty guidelines, used for 2027 coverage).

2. Age and tobacco are rated per person

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) lets insurers vary premiums by age within a 3:1 ratio for adults and by tobacco use within a 1.5:1 ratio (CMS). A quote that used one age for a couple, or skipped the tobacco question, will be off.

3. The plan may not be sold at your address

Some quote tools show sample or statewide prices. Real plans are filed by county and rating area. Ask for quotes on the exact plans sold in your ZIP code and county.

4. Your income turns out different

Advance credits are reconciled on your federal tax return using IRS Form 8962. If your 2027 income ends up higher than you estimated, you may owe some or all of the extra credit back. From tax year 2026, the old repayment caps no longer apply (IRS).

What kinds of plans can you get quotes for?

You can get quotes for ACA plans sold on and off the Marketplace, for alternative plans such as short-term medical, and for ancillary plans such as dental and vision. Only ACA plans sold through the Marketplace can use the premium tax credit.

  • Marketplace ACA plans through HealthCare.gov or your state exchange. Subsidies and cost-sharing reductions apply here. Start with our health insurance marketplace guide.
  • Off-exchange ACA plans bought directly from an insurer or agent. Same core protections, but HealthCare.gov notes you can’t get premium tax credits outside the Marketplace.
  • Short-term and other alternative plans. These are not ACA-compliant and can exclude pre-existing conditions. Read our honest short-term guide before you compare.
  • Ancillary plans such as dental, vision or accident coverage that sit alongside a medical plan.

For a full breakdown of these choices, see individual health insurance and, if you are covering a spouse or children, family health insurance.

How do you compare health insurance quotes side by side?

Compare health insurance quotes on total yearly cost, not just the monthly premium. Add twelve months of premium to the costs you expect to pay for care, then check the network and drug list. The cheapest monthly quote is often not the cheapest year.

Use the same five numbers for every plan you compare:

  1. Monthly premium after any tax credit. Multiply by 12.
  2. Deductible. What you pay before the plan shares most costs.
  3. Copays and coinsurance for the care you actually use.
  4. Out-of-pocket maximum. For 2027 no ACA plan can exceed $12,000 for one person or $24,000 for a family for in-network covered care.
  5. Network type. HMO, PPO, EPO or POS. See HMO vs. PPO vs. EPO vs. POS.

Every plan must give you a Summary of Benefits and Coverage in a standard format. Ask for it with each quote. It makes plans from different insurers easy to compare line by line.

Silver can beat Bronze: if your income is at or below 250% FPL, silver plans come with cost-sharing reductions that lower deductibles and copays. A silver quote may cost more per month and far less per year. Our metal tier guide shows how.

When can you turn a quote into coverage?

You can get health insurance quotes any time, but you can enroll in an ACA plan only during Open Enrollment or a Special Enrollment Period. For 2027 coverage, HealthCare.gov Open Enrollment runs November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027.

2027 enrollment dates on HealthCare.gov
If you enrollCoverage starts
November 1 – December 15, 2026January 1, 2027
December 16, 2026 – January 15, 2027February 1, 2027
After January 15, 2027Only with a Special Enrollment Period

States that run their own exchange can set later deadlines, so check yours. Losing other coverage, moving, marriage or having a baby can open a Special Enrollment Period, usually for 60 days. Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) accept applications all year. Full dates are in our Open Enrollment 2027 guide.

Already enrolled for 2026? Get fresh quotes anyway. A KFF analysis of 276 insurers found they proposed a median 15% premium increase for 2027, and your current plan’s new price may not be the best value.

Why do quote sites lead to spam calls?

Many free quote sites are lead-generation businesses. They collect your name, phone number and health details, then sell that lead to several agents or call centers at once. That is why one form can trigger a wave of calls, texts and emails.

Before you enter a phone number, read the site’s consent text. Phrases like “our partners may contact you” usually mean your information will be shared. You can check any agent’s license through your state insurance department, listed in the NAIC directory.

How Honesty quotes health insurance

Honesty®, a licensed AI insurance agent from Honesty® Insurance Services, LLC (NPN 21094885), builds health insurance quotes around your household, not around a sales script. It compares ACA, alternative and ancillary plans side by side and works for you, not the carriers.

  • Subsidy first. It checks Medicaid, CHIP and premium tax credit eligibility before showing a price, so the number you see is close to the number you pay.
  • Every option, labeled honestly. ACA plans come first. If you look at a short-term or other alternative plan, it explains the exclusions in plain words.
  • Your doctors and drugs. Tell it who you see and what you take, and it checks networks and drug lists.
  • Privacy as a feature. We never sell or share your data, and there are no spam calls.
  • 24/7 by chat, voice or text, with licensed agents behind the technology. Licensed in 49 states and DC.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get health insurance quotes?

Enter your ZIP code, the ages of everyone who needs coverage, tobacco use, household size and expected income on HealthCare.gov, your state exchange or a licensed agent like Honesty. You get exact prices after you complete the full application.

Does getting a health insurance quote affect my credit?

No. ACA plan prices are not based on credit, health history or sex. They depend on location, age, tobacco use, plan category and who is covered, with a tax credit based on income.

Why is my final premium different from my online quote?

The quote used estimates. The application confirms your household, income and address, which can change your premium tax credit and which plans you can buy. Age or tobacco details entered differently also change the price.

Can I get a health insurance quote without giving my phone number?

Yes. HealthCare.gov’s See plans & prices tool lets you preview plans and estimated prices without creating an account. Honesty also lets you compare by chat, and we never sell or share your data.

Do I need my income to get a quote?

You need it to see your real price. Without income, a quote shows the full premium. With your estimated 2027 income, it shows the premium after any tax credit for households between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level.

When can I buy a plan after getting a quote?

During Open Enrollment, November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027 on HealthCare.gov, or within a Special Enrollment Period after a qualifying life event. Medicaid and CHIP accept applications all year.

Ancillary quotes can include accident insurance, which pays set amounts after an injury on top of your medical plan.
