Health insurance Knoxville quick answers for 2027
Knoxville is the seat of Knox County, and Tennessee has no state exchange. If you do not have coverage through a job, Medicare or TennCare, you shop on HealthCare.gov, either directly or with a licensed agent or assistant connected to it. The price of the same plan is the same either way.
Every Marketplace plan covers essential benefits such as doctor visits, hospital stays, prescriptions, maternity and mental health care, and no insurer can turn you down for a pre-existing condition. The Knox County Health Department, with its main location on Dameron Avenue, runs immunizations, women’s health and other public health services, but it does not sell coverage.
For the statewide picture, including TennCare and CoverKids, read our Tennessee health insurance guide.
Knoxville hospitals and networks to check
East Tennessee plans are often built around one hospital system, so when you compare health insurance, Knoxville networks can matter more than the premium. Before you enroll, confirm that your doctors and the hospital you would use are in-network for 2027.
- University of Tennessee Medical Center is an academic medical center and Level I trauma center that serves as a referral center for East Tennessee (overview).
- Covenant Health is a Knoxville-based system whose hospitals include Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center.
We do not rank carriers or hospitals. Carriers and networks vary by county and change from year to year, so search each plan’s provider directory by name and check your prescriptions on its drug list. Our guide on how to choose a health plan explains HMO, EPO and PPO trade-offs.
UT Knoxville students and young adults
With the University of Tennessee’s flagship campus in town, many questions about health insurance in Knoxville come from students and recent graduates. There are usually three options, and the right one depends on income, age and where your doctors are.
- A parent’s plan. You can generally stay on a parent’s plan until age 26, but check that the network works in Knoxville if your family lives elsewhere.
- UT’s Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP). UT describes SHIP as optional major medical coverage for eligible domestic students; it is required for international students, and eligible graduate assistants are enrolled automatically (UT Student Health).
- A Marketplace plan. Students with their own income may qualify for a premium tax credit. Graduating or aging off a parent’s plan opens a Special Enrollment Period.
Honesty.AI compares all three for your Knoxville ZIP code and applies any subsidy you qualify for.
Health insurance Knoxville tips for tourism and seasonal work
Many Knoxville-area workers commute to hospitality, restaurant and attraction jobs toward the Great Smoky Mountains, where hours swing with the seasons. Neighboring Sevier County had the highest uninsured rate, 21.4%, among the 21 Tennessee counties with 2023 Census data, according to the Sycamore Institute.
If your paycheck rises in summer and falls in winter, estimate your total 2027 income, not your best month. The premium tax credit is reconciled at tax time, so update HealthCare.gov when your hours change. If you lose job coverage mid-season, you have 60 days to choose a new plan.
Seasonal and part-time employers often do not offer coverage at all, and some offer only limited benefit plans. Read what a job plan actually covers before you turn down a Marketplace plan. If the employer coverage for you alone costs less than 10.22% of household income in 2027 and meets minimum value, it counts as affordable and blocks your own credit; if it does not, you can still shop for subsidized health insurance. Knoxville gig and hospitality workers who are self-employed may also be able to deduct premiums they pay themselves on their federal tax return.
Your 2027 subsidy in Knox County
For 2027 coverage, the premium tax credit in Knox County starts at 100% of the poverty level and ends above 400%, because the enhanced credits expired after 2025. That is $15,960 to $63,840 for one person, and $33,000 to $132,000 for a family of four.
| Household income | Share of income you pay for benchmark Silver (2027) |
|---|---|
| 100% – 150% of poverty level | 2.15% – 4.30% |
| 150% – 250% | 4.30% – 8.66% |
| 250% – 400% | 8.66% – 10.22% |
| Over 400% | No credit |
Early retirees in the Knoxville area should watch the 400% line closely, since one large retirement-account withdrawal can push a household over it for the year. If you earn under 250%, compare Silver plans first for cost-sharing reductions. The IRS explains reconciliation, and our 2027 subsidies guide walks through examples.
Below 100% of the poverty level, most adults get no credit unless they fit a TennCare group, such as parents or caretakers of a minor child, pregnant women or SSI recipients. Apply at TennCare Connect. See our affordable health insurance Tennessee hub for every income band.
Cherokee Health Systems and low-cost care in Knoxville
If you are in the coverage gap or between plans, a federally qualified health center can keep primary care going. Health centers funded by HRSA must offer discounts based on income.
In Knoxville, Cherokee Health Systems operates several federally qualified health center sites, according to HRSA’s Find a Health Center data. Search by ZIP code for the closest location and its services, and ask about the sliding fee discount when you call to book. Bring proof of income and household size to the first visit so the discount can be applied. A clinic is not insurance, so a subsidized plan is still worth checking if your income is at or above the poverty line.
Navigator and consumer help for Knox County
Tennessee’s federal Navigator for 2026–2027, Family & Children’s Service, serves Knox County with virtual enrollment help; in-person appointments are limited to ten Middle and West Tennessee counties, per the CMS Navigator awardee summary. The same summary lists Bridge Knoxville and Appalachian Mountain Project Access among its community partners.
To find certified application counselors or licensed agents who meet in person near you, search your ZIP code at localhelp.healthcare.gov. For a dispute with an insurer, the Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance’s Consumer Insurance Services line is 1-800-342-4029.
Deadlines and life changes for Knoxville residents

Cigna is leaving the individual market after December 31, 2026, so Cigna members must pick a new plan (ACA Signups). Moving to Knoxville, losing coverage, marriage or a baby can open a Special Enrollment Period. East Tennessee has seen flooding from severe storms; if a federally declared disaster keeps you from enrolling on time, ask about a disaster Special Enrollment Period.

Is there in-person Navigator help in Knox County?
Tennessee’s federal Navigator, Family & Children’s Service, serves Knox County with virtual help for 2026–2027. Search localhelp.healthcare.gov by ZIP code to find certified counselors or licensed agents who meet in person.
I work seasonal jobs near the Smokies. How do I estimate income?
