Health insurance Indianapolis: neighbors talking outside brick homes on an Indianapolis street

Health Insurance in Indianapolis, IN: 2027 Plans, HIP & Local Help

Health insurance in Indianapolis for 2027 is bought on HealthCare.gov, Indiana’s federal Marketplace, from November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. Marion County adults under about 138% of the poverty level may qualify for the Healthy Indiana Plan, and the county’s sliding-fee health centers serve anyone, insured or not.

Updated for the 2027 plan year (October 2026)

Shopping for health insurance, Indianapolis residents have more choices than most Hoosiers, and more to sort through. This page covers what is specific to Indianapolis and Marion County. For statewide rules, see our Indiana health insurance guide, and for cost-cutting, our affordable health insurance in Indiana page.

Indianapolis hospital systems and your network

Indianapolis is home to several large hospital systems, and Marketplace plans do not all include the same ones. Before you compare prices, confirm that your doctors and the hospital you would actually use are in the plan’s network. A low premium means little if your specialist is out of network.

The city’s main systems include IU Health, Eskenazi Health (the Marion County public hospital system), Community Health Network, and Ascension St. Vincent. Each insurer contracts with them differently, and networks can change from one plan year to the next. If you see one system for ongoing care, such as cancer treatment, a pregnancy, or a chronic condition, make that system your first filter.

Families with children

Parents should also check pediatric coverage. Indianapolis has two dedicated children’s hospitals, Riley Children’s Health (part of IU Health) and Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital (part of Ascension St. Vincent). If your child sees a pediatric specialist at one of them, confirm that hospital is in network before you switch plans. Kids who qualify for Hoosier Healthwise, including CHIP, follow that program’s network instead.

Comparing total cost

Once your network checks out, compare the whole year. Add up premiums, the deductible, and what you expect to spend on visits and prescriptions. The 2027 out-of-pocket maximum is $12,000 for one person and $24,000 for a family, and many plans set a lower limit. If you earn up to 250% FPL, a silver plan’s cost-sharing reductions often make it the better buy. When comparing health insurance, Indianapolis families who use care regularly should run those numbers first.

Tip: Search each doctor by name in the plan’s provider directory, then call the office to confirm they take that exact plan for 2027. Directories are not always current.

2027 enrollment dates for Marion County

Marion County follows the federal HealthCare.gov calendar. Open Enrollment runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Choose a plan by December 15, 2026 for coverage starting January 1, 2027, or by January 15 for coverage starting February 1.

Our Open Enrollment 2027 page has the full timeline. If you move to Indianapolis from another county or state, lose job-based coverage, or have a baby, you may get a Special Enrollment Period outside these dates. Central Indiana also sees spring tornado warnings and severe storms; losing coverage or being displaced after a declared disaster can qualify you for one too.

HIP in Indianapolis: the 2027 work rule

The Healthy Indiana Plan covers adults 19 to 64 with income up to about 138% of the federal poverty level, which is $22,025 a year for a single person under the 2026 guidelines. Indianapolis residents apply through the FSSA Benefits Portal, by phone at 1-877-GET-HIP-9, or at a Marion County Division of Family Resources office.

From January 1, 2027, non-exempt HIP members must complete 80 hours a month of work, training, half-time or part-time school, or community service, according to the Indiana FSSA. New applicants in January 2027 must show they met it during October through December 2026. Exemptions include pregnancy, caregiving, medical frailty, and substance-use treatment.

That matters in a city with many hourly, gig, and warehouse jobs, where hours swing from week to week. If you are close to the line, keep pay stubs and volunteer logs, and set up a Benefits Portal account to report hours. Losing HIP for missing the requirement generally also blocks Marketplace subsidies.

Health insurance Indianapolis workers and students should know about

Indianapolis has a mixed economy of life sciences, health systems, logistics, government, and a large hourly service workforce. Each group tends to hit different coverage questions.

Self-employed, gig, and hourly workers

If your income moves up and down, estimate 2027 income carefully and update HealthCare.gov when it changes. Your premium tax credit is reconciled on your 2027 tax return, so a raise late in the year can mean paying some of it back. Above 400% FPL, about $63,840 for one person, there is no credit at all for 2027.

College students

Students at IU Indianapolis, Butler, and other local schools may be able to stay on a parent’s plan until 26, buy a school plan, or use the Marketplace. Half-time enrollment in an eligible program also counts toward the HIP work requirement.

Job offers with coverage

If an employer offers affordable coverage, 10.22% of household income or less for employee-only coverage in 2027, you generally can’t get a Marketplace credit for yourself. Compare the offer before turning it down.

Which insurers sell plans here

Four insurers have approved 2027 Indiana Marketplace plans: Coordinated Care (Ambetter), Anthem, UnitedHealthcare, and AmeriHealth Caritas Indiana, according to the Indiana Department of Insurance. Not all of them cover every county, and county-level lists for 2027 are confirmed on HealthCare.gov once window shopping opens.

Cigna and CareSource are leaving Indiana’s Marketplace. If you had either in Indianapolis, choose a new plan before December 15 rather than relying on the automatic match. IDOI’s approved average rate increase is 17.5%, so when renewing health insurance, Indianapolis residents should compare every option in their ZIP code.
