Health Insurance in Fort Wayne, IN: 2027 Coverage Guide for Allen County

Health insurance in Fort Wayne for 2027 comes through HealthCare.gov, with Open Enrollment from November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027. Allen County adults under about 138% of the poverty level may get the Healthy Indiana Plan, and uninsured adults under 200% can use the free Matthew 25 clinic.

Updated for the 2027 plan year (October 2026)

If you are comparing health insurance, Fort Wayne gives you a short list of hospital systems and a strong safety net of local clinics. Both shape which plan makes sense. This guide covers Fort Wayne and Allen County. For statewide rules, read the Indiana health insurance guide, and for ways to cut costs, see affordable health insurance in Indiana.

Where Fort Wayne residents buy coverage

Fort Wayne residents buy individual and family plans on HealthCare.gov, the federal Marketplace Indiana uses. That is the only place to get a premium tax credit, whether you enroll yourself, with a certified Indiana Navigator, or through a licensed agency connected to it.

For 2027 coverage, Open Enrollment runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Enroll by December 15, 2026 to start January 1; enroll later and coverage starts February 1. Our Open Enrollment 2027 page lists every date.

Subsidies cap what you pay for the benchmark silver plan at 2.15% to 10.22% of income for 2027, but stop entirely above 400% of the poverty level, about $63,840 for one person. Our 2027 subsidy guide shows how to estimate yours.

No insurance yet? Fort Wayne’s free and sliding-fee care

Fort Wayne has unusually strong options for people without coverage. They don’t replace insurance, but they can carry you through a gap or a long wait for HIP approval.

  • Matthew 25 Health & Dental Clinic provides free medical, dental, vision, and mental health care to adults 18 and older who are uninsured and at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines. It serves Allen County and ten other northeast Indiana counties, plus four counties in northwest Ohio, according to Matthew 25.
  • Neighborhood Health, a federally qualified health center founded in 1969, offers medical, dental, optometry, and behavioral health care on a sliding-fee scale regardless of insurance. Its sites include South Calhoun Street and the Oxford Clinic on Warsaw Street on the southeast side, a federally designated shortage area, per the NMTC Coalition project profile.

Note that Matthew 25 serves only people without insurance, so once you enroll in a Marketplace plan or HIP, you would move to a regular in-network doctor.

Parkview, Lutheran and your plan’s network

Most Fort Wayne hospital care runs through two systems: Parkview Health, which operates Parkview Regional Medical Center on the north side, and Lutheran Health Network, anchored by Lutheran Hospital. Because there are only two big players, a plan that leaves out the system where your doctors practice can force you to switch providers.

Check your primary care doctor, any specialists, and the hospital you would use in an emergency in each plan’s directory. Then call to confirm for 2027. Families should check pediatric specialists as well, since some pediatric care sends Fort Wayne children to other cities. See Parkview Health for its locations.

Tip: The St. Joseph, St. Marys, and Maumee rivers meet in Fort Wayne, and flooding has hit the city before. Keep a photo of your insurance card and plan ID on your phone. Losing coverage or moving after a declared disaster can open a Special Enrollment Period.

Healthy Indiana Plan changes for Allen County

The Healthy Indiana Plan (HIP) covers adults 19 to 64 earning up to about 138% of the federal poverty level, or $22,025 a year for one person under the 2026 guidelines. Allen County residents apply through the FSSA Benefits Portal, at 1-877-GET-HIP-9, or at the local Division of Family Resources office.

From January 1, 2027, HIP members who are not exempt must log 80 hours a month in work, job training, part-time school, or community service, according to Indiana FSSA. A three-month lookback applies to new applicants, and FSSA checks compliance every quarter.

Many Fort Wayne jobs are in manufacturing, health care, and retail, where overtime and shift changes make monthly hours uneven. Keep records, and if you volunteer, log it. A gap in compliance ends HIP coverage and generally blocks Marketplace subsidies as well, so don’t let notices from FSSA sit unopened.

Health insurance Fort Wayne students, Guard members and border workers need

A few Fort Wayne groups face questions most Hoosiers don’t. Here is how coverage usually works for each.

Purdue Fort Wayne and other college students

Students at Purdue University Fort Wayne, Indiana Tech, and the University of Saint Francis can usually stay on a parent’s plan until 26. If that plan’s network is built around another city, a Fort Wayne Marketplace plan may work better. Half-time enrollment in an eligible program also counts toward HIP’s 2027 requirement.

Air National Guard families

The Indiana Air National Guard’s 122nd Fighter Wing is based at Fort Wayne’s airport. Members of the Selected Reserve may qualify for TRICARE Reserve Select, and full-time active orders bring TRICARE. Compare those options with Marketplace coverage before you enroll in a subsidized plan.

Living in Indiana, working in Ohio

Fort Wayne is close to the Ohio line. You buy Marketplace coverage in the state where you live, not where you work, so an Allen County resident with an Ohio job still shops Indiana plans. Ask whether your plan’s network includes any Ohio doctors you see.

Insurers and 2027 rate changes

Indiana’s Marketplace has four approved insurers for 2027: Coordinated Care (Ambetter) statewide, Anthem in 85 counties, UnitedHealthcare in 36, and newcomer AmeriHealth Caritas Indiana in 7, according to the Indiana Department of Insurance. The exact list for Allen County will be confirmed on HealthCare.gov when window shopping opens.

Cigna and CareSource leave the Indiana Marketplace after 2026. IDOI approved an average increase of 17.5% for 2027 individual Marketplace plans, so last year’s plan may now cost more than an alternative. When shopping for health insurance, Fort Wayne families should compare at least two insurers before renewing.

When you compare, look past the premium. A bronze plan may look cheapest, but the 2027 out-of-pocket limit can reach $12,000 for one person and $24,000 for a family. If your household earns up to 250% of the poverty level, a silver plan adds cost-sharing reductions that lower deductibles and copays, which often makes it the better value for anyone who expects regular visits or prescriptions. Gold can make sense for a planned surgery or a pregnancy. Our how to choose a health plan guide walks through the trade-offs.
