For your own health insurance, Huntsville residents use the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov. Open Enrollment for 2027 runs Nov 1, 2026 – Jan 15, 2027; enroll by Dec 15 for Jan 1 coverage. Huntsville’s defense and contractor workforce means many families move between job plans, TRICARE and Marketplace coverage.

Health insurance Huntsville overview for 2027
Huntsville is now Alabama’s largest city. The Census Bureau’s Vintage 2025 estimates put it at 233,627 residents, ahead of Mobile and Birmingham (Census city population estimates). Growth means many newcomers shopping for coverage for the first time in Alabama.
If you don’t get coverage from an employer, the military, Medicare or Medicaid, you buy a plan on HealthCare.gov. Alabama has no state exchange and has not expanded Medicaid, so premium tax credits generally start at 100% of the federal poverty level and end at 400%.
Moving to Huntsville from another state is a qualifying life event if you had coverage before the move. That opens a Special Enrollment Period, generally for 60 days. Statewide rules and the insurers approved for 2027 are in our Alabama health insurance guide.
Redstone Arsenal, contractors and coverage changes
Huntsville’s economy is built around Redstone Arsenal. Its tenants include NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, U.S. Army Materiel Command and the Missile Defense Agency, according to U.S. Army Garrison Redstone. NASA says Marshall employs more than 6,000 people.
That mix creates three common coverage situations:
- Military families and retirees usually have TRICARE. If you have TRICARE, you don’t need a Marketplace plan and generally won’t qualify for Marketplace savings.
- Federal civilian employees are offered plans through the Federal Employees Health Benefits program.
- Contractor employees usually have job-based coverage, which ends when a contract or job ends.
Losing job-based coverage is a qualifying life event. You generally have 60 days to pick a Marketplace plan, and you may qualify for a premium tax credit based on your expected 2027 income. Compare that with COBRA, which keeps the same plan but usually at the full cost.
Contract gap tip: if your contract job is ending, look at Marketplace options before your last day so coverage can start the first of the next month without a gap.
Huntsville Hospital and Crestwood networks
Before you pick a plan, confirm your doctors and preferred hospital are in-network for 2027. Huntsville has two main hospitals, and networks for health insurance Huntsville shoppers can differ from plan to plan.
Huntsville Hospital is a not-for-profit, community-owned hospital governed by the Health Care Authority of the City of Huntsville. It describes itself as one of only three Level I trauma centers serving Alabama statewide (Huntsville Hospital). Its health system includes hospitals in Madison, Athens and Decatur.
Crestwood Medical Center is a 180-bed acute care hospital (Crestwood). It offers a charity care discount based on multiples of the federal poverty level.
Hospital financial assistance
Huntsville Hospital’s financial assistance program is based on income, assets and the federal poverty guidelines. It covers hospital charges only, not physician fees billed separately. Call (256) 265-9689 to ask about an application. These programs help with bills, but they aren’t insurance.

2027 subsidies and costs in Huntsville
Huntsville’s engineering and contractor salaries put many households near the top of the subsidy range, so the 400% cliff matters here. For 2027, a household above 400% of the federal poverty level, $132,000 for a family of four, gets no premium tax credit.
Below that line, the IRS caps what you pay for the benchmark Silver plan at 2.15% to 10.22% of income, depending on your income level. Households up to 250% of poverty can also get cost-sharing reductions on Silver plans. Details are in our 2027 subsidies guide and the affordable health insurance Alabama hub.
The 2027 out-of-pocket maximum is $12,000 for one person and $24,000 for a family. All Alabama insurers received approved 2027 rate increases from the state, so compare health insurance Huntsville options again this fall.
Self-employed consultants and 1099 work
Many Huntsville engineers and analysts work as independent consultants between contracts. If that is you, estimate your 2027 net self-employment income, after business expenses, because that is what the Marketplace uses. Update your application during the year if a new contract changes your income, so your credit stays accurate and you avoid a surprise when you reconcile on your 2027 tax return.
Nearing 65
If you retire early from a federal or contractor job, a Marketplace plan can bridge the gap until Medicare. Plan the switch: Marketplace coverage doesn’t end on its own when Medicare starts, so cancel it once your Medicare coverage begins.
Community health centers in Madison County
Community health centers see patients with or without insurance and charge on a sliding scale by income. Huntsville health center sites listed in HRSA’s health center data include:
- Thrive Alabama, adult primary care at 3500 Memorial Parkway SW.
- Central North Alabama Health Services, Huntsville Family Health Center at 751 Pleasant Row NW.
- HAPPI Health, with sites on Sparkman Drive NW and St. Clair Avenue SE.
The Madison County Health Department, part of the Alabama Department of Public Health, offers vaccines, family planning, WIC, STD services and cancer screenings. Call (256) 539-3711.
Students and young adults in Huntsville
Huntsville is home to the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and many young adults work their first engineering or tech job here. Young adults can usually stay on a parent’s plan until age 26.
After 26, or if a parent’s plan doesn’t cover care in Alabama, compare a Marketplace plan. People under 30 can also buy a catastrophic plan, which has low premiums but very high deductibles and covers mostly worst-case care. Turning 26 is a qualifying life event.
Deadlines and life events
Open Enrollment for 2027 coverage runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Enroll by December 15 for coverage on January 1; enroll by January 15 for February 1. See our Open Enrollment 2027 guide.
North Alabama also sees severe weather and tornadoes. Keep a digital copy of your insurance card. If a disaster forces you to move or causes you to lose coverage, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period outside Open Enrollment.
Other life events common in a fast-growing city also count: getting married, having or adopting a baby, and moving to Huntsville with prior coverage. Report the change within 60 days, and keep documents such as a lease, a termination letter or a birth certificate handy in case the Marketplace asks you to confirm it.

Frequently asked questions
I’m leaving a Redstone Arsenal contractor job. Can I get Marketplace coverage?
Yes. Losing job-based coverage is a qualifying life event, which generally gives you 60 days to enroll in a Marketplace plan. You may qualify for a premium tax credit based on your expected 2027 income.
Do I need a Marketplace plan if I have TRICARE?
No. TRICARE counts as health coverage, so military families and retirees who have it don’t need a Marketplace plan and generally won’t qualify for Marketplace savings.
Does Huntsville Hospital offer financial assistance?
Yes. Huntsville Hospital’s financial assistance is based on income, assets and the federal poverty guidelines and covers hospital charges, not separately billed physician fees. It is not a substitute for insurance.
Is there a subsidy limit for higher-income Huntsville families in 2027?
Yes. For 2027 coverage, households above 400% of the federal poverty level get no premium tax credit. For a family of four, that line is $132,000.
Where can I get low-cost care in Huntsville without insurance?
Community health centers such as Thrive Alabama, Central North Alabama Health Services and HAPPI Health charge on a sliding scale by income. The Madison County Health Department also offers public health services.
