Health Insurance in Gainesville, FL: 2027 Plans for UF Students, Families & Workers

For health insurance, Gainesville residents have three main routes: UF’s Student Health Insurance Plan (or a waiver) for University of Florida students, a parent’s plan until 26, and the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov for everyone else. Marketplace Open Enrollment for 2027 runs November 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027.

Health insurance Gainesville: the city at a glance

Gainesville is the largest city and county seat of Alachua County, and it’s home to Florida’s largest and oldest university, according to the City of Gainesville. The city lists the University of Florida and its UF Health hospital as Gainesville’s leading employers, and puts the median age at just 26.4.

That young, campus-centered population shapes how people here buy coverage. A big share of the questions we hear about health insurance in Gainesville come from students and their parents: whether to keep the university plan, how a parent’s plan works out of state, and what happens at graduation. Everyone else, including contractors, restaurant and retail workers, and early retirees, usually buys through the Marketplace.

UF’s student health insurance requirement

The University of Florida requires health coverage as a condition of enrollment. According to UF’s Student Financial Affairs office, newly admitted or re-admitted domestic students enrolled at least half-time in a degree program, plus all international students, must buy the Student Health Insurance Plan unless they show comparable coverage.

UF uses an opt-out system. Under UF Policy 16-004, students who don’t submit a waiver by the fee payment deadline are automatically enrolled in the university plan for every semester they’re enrolled at least half-time, and they owe the related fees. Comparable coverage must give you access to primary, preventive, urgent, and emergency care where you live while studying on campus.

Don’t miss the waiver deadline. If you already have coverage through a parent or a Marketplace plan, submit proof each time UF asks. A missed waiver can leave you with two plans and a charge on your student account.

When is UF open enrollment for 2027?

“UF open enrollment” means two different things, depending on whether you work at the University of Florida or study there. Employees pick 2027 benefits during a short fall window. Students don’t have an open enrollment; they either keep the student plan or file a waiver each term by UF’s deadline.

That split trips up a lot of families comparing health insurance. Gainesville households with a UF employee, a UF student and a Marketplace shopper can face three different deadlines in the same season.

Everyone else in GainesvilleNovember 1, 2026 to January 15, 2027HealthCare.gov or a licensed agent

Employee dates come from UF Human Resources; student deadlines come from UF Health Compliance. When you weigh a UF job’s health insurance, Gainesville families follow the federal affordability rule. If a spouse works at UF and you are comparing that coverage with a Marketplace plan, remember that an employer plan counts as affordable for 2027 when the employee’s cheapest self-only option costs no more than 10.22% of household income.

Waiver warning: UF says short-term medical, fixed indemnity, travel, limited-benefit and emergency-only plans won’t be accepted as comparable coverage. If you plan to waive the student plan, use an ACA-compliant plan such as a parent’s employer or Marketplace plan.

Under 26: school plan, parent’s plan, or your own?

Most UF and Santa Fe College students under 26 can choose among three kinds of health insurance. Gainesville students often get the best fit by comparing all three before the waiver deadline, not after.

UF Student Health Insurance PlanYou have no other coverage or want care built around campusCoverage follows your enrollment; check summer and graduation dates
A parent’s plan (to age 26)The plan’s network includes Gainesville doctors and hospitalsOut-of-state HMOs and EPOs may cover only emergencies here
Your own Marketplace planYou file your own taxes and earn at least 100% of the poverty levelSubsidies depend on your estimated 2027 income

On a parent’s Marketplace plan, you can stay covered through December 31 of the year you turn 26, according to HealthCare.gov. If you buy your own plan and you’re under 30, a Catastrophic plan is another option, though it doesn’t qualify for a premium tax credit.

For a single student filing their own return, the subsidy floor in Florida is $15,960 of income for 2027 coverage. Below that, you generally can’t get Marketplace help, and Florida’s lack of Medicaid expansion means adults without children usually don’t qualify for Medicaid either.

Graduating or turning 26 in Gainesville

Graduation is the moment many young adults in Gainesville lose health insurance without noticing. Student coverage usually ends with your last enrolled term, and a parent’s plan ends at 26. Both events can open a Special Enrollment Period, which generally gives you 60 days to pick a Marketplace plan.

  1. Find your end date. Check when your student plan or parent’s plan stops.
  2. Estimate your 2027 income. A first-job salary, a stipend, or part-time work all count.
  3. Check a new job’s offer. If your employer’s cheapest self-only plan costs no more than 10.22% of household income for 2027, it counts as affordable and you usually can’t get a subsidy.
  4. Apply before coverage lapses. Applying early in your 60-day window helps avoid a gap.

Marketplace plans in Alachua County for 2027

Florida uses the federal exchange, so the Marketplace health insurance Gainesville families and self-employed workers buy comes through HealthCare.gov or a licensed agent connected to it. Enroll by December 15, 2026 for coverage starting January 1, 2027; Open Enrollment closes January 15, 2027.

The enhanced tax credits of 2021–2025 expired at the end of 2025, and the 400% “subsidy cliff” applies again for 2027. Insurers nationally proposed a median 15% increase for 2027, according to KFF, so don’t simply auto-renew.

Household sizeSubsidy starts (100% FPL)Subsidy ends (400% FPL)
1$15,960$63,840
2$21,640$86,560
3$27,320$109,280
4$33,000$132,000

For 2027, the out-of-pocket maximum is $12,000 for an individual and $24,000 for a family. Children in lower-income homes can often get Florida KidCare, and adults can check Medicaid through ACCESS Florida. See the full rules in our 2027 subsidies guide.

Is your insurer leaving? Cigna is leaving Florida’s Marketplace after December 31, 2026, and Sunshine State Health Plan’s Marketplace products are being discontinued. If either covers you now, choose a new plan by December 15. Our Florida health insurance guide has details.

UF Health Shands and your network

The biggest name in local care is UF Health Shands Hospital. According to UF Health, it’s home to a state-designated Level I trauma center, lists 1,145 licensed beds, and draws patients from all 67 Florida counties. UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital is part of the same Gainesville system.

A large academic medical center doesn’t mean every plan includes it. When you shop for health insurance, Gainesville residents should check the network before the premium:

  • Your doctors and specialists, including any UF Health clinic you already use.
  • Your hospital, especially for planned surgery or ongoing treatment.
  • Your prescriptions, on each plan’s drug list.

Carriers and networks vary by county, and 2027 plan lists for Alachua County usually aren’t final until late October. Compare every option on HealthCare.gov or with Honesty, and see how to choose a health plan.

In-person help and low-cost clinics in Gainesville

Alachua County is one of only eight Florida counties with in-person Navigator service for 2026–2027, according to the CMS Navigator award summary, which names the University of South Florida as the statewide Navigator. Search localhelp.healthcare.gov by ZIP code to book free help.

For sliding-fee primary care, Palms Medical Group’s Gainesville site on SW 62nd Boulevard is listed by HRSA as an HRSA-funded health center (see palmsmg.org). The Florida Department of Health in Alachua County also offers public health services.

Health insurance Gainesville FAQ

Does the University of Florida require health insurance?

Yes. Newly admitted or re-admitted domestic students enrolled at least half-time in a degree program, and all international students, must buy UF’s Student Health Insurance Plan unless they show comparable coverage. Students who miss the waiver deadline are automatically enrolled and charged.

Can my parent’s out-of-state plan cover me at UF?

It can, but check the network first. Many HMO and EPO plans cover only emergencies outside their home area. If the plan has few Gainesville doctors, compare it with the UF plan or your own Marketplace plan before you waive.

What happens to my coverage when I graduate?

Student coverage usually ends with your last enrolled term. Losing coverage generally opens a 60-day Special Enrollment Period, so you can pick a Marketplace plan without waiting for Open Enrollment. Turning 26 and aging off a parent’s plan works the same way.

Is there in-person enrollment help in Gainesville?

Yes. Alachua County is one of eight Florida counties with in-person Navigator service for 2026–2027 under the University of South Florida’s federal award. Search localhelp.healthcare.gov by ZIP code, or get help from a licensed agent by chat, voice, or text.

Does a short-term plan count for the UF insurance waiver?

No. UF does not accept short-term, fixed indemnity, travel, limited-benefit or emergency-only plans as comparable coverage. Use an ACA-compliant plan, such as a parent’s employer plan or a Marketplace plan, to waive the student plan.

Open Enrollment runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Enroll by December 15, 2026 for coverage starting January 1, 2027. Outside that window you need a qualifying life event, such as losing other coverage.
