Health insurance Boca Raton residents buy on their own comes from the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov. Open Enrollment for 2027 coverage runs Nov 1, 2026 – Jan 15, 2027 (enroll by Dec 15 for Jan 1). It is the main bridge for early retirees under 65; at 65 most people move to Medicare and must end their Marketplace plan themselves.

Health insurance Boca Raton basics for 2027
Boca Raton sits in southern Palm Beach County, and like the rest of Florida it uses the federal Marketplace, HealthCare.gov, for individual and family ACA plans. Every plan covers essential health benefits, and no insurer can deny you or charge more because of a pre-existing condition, which matters a great deal in your fifties and sixties.
Dates for 2027 coverage: Open Enrollment runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Enroll by December 15, 2026 for coverage that starts January 1, 2027; enroll December 16 through January 15 and it starts February 1. Our Open Enrollment 2027 guide covers every deadline.
Boca’s age profile shapes the advice on this page. U.S. Census Bureau survey data (ACS 2020–2024) shows about one in four Boca Raton residents is 65 or older and roughly another one in five is 50 to 64 (Census Reporter, Boca Raton). That means a lot of households are either bridging to Medicare or helping a spouse do it.
Retiring before 65: the Marketplace bridge
If you leave a job, sell a business, or retire early, the Marketplace is usually the most complete way to stay covered until Medicare. Losing job-based coverage opens a Special Enrollment Period, generally 60 days, so you do not have to wait for the fall. COBRA is another option; compare both before you decide.
One thing surprises many early retirees: age is one of the few factors insurers can use to set your premium. Under ACA rules, premiums can be up to three times higher for older adults than for younger ones (HealthCare.gov). Location, tobacco use, and who is on the plan also count; your health history does not.
That is why health insurance Boca Raton early retirees choose deserves a careful look at the whole picture: premium, deductible, the 2027 out-of-pocket cap ($12,000 individual / $24,000 family at most), and whether your specialists are in network.
Tip: Insurers nationally proposed a median 15% increase for 2027 (KFF), after roughly 20% for 2026. If you are already on a Marketplace plan, re-shop this fall rather than letting it auto-renew.
The 400% subsidy cliff and retirement income
For early retirees, the single biggest number in 2027 is 400% of the federal poverty level. The enhanced tax credits that removed the cliff expired on December 31, 2025. For 2027 coverage, if your household income is above 400% FPL you get no premium tax credit at all; at or below it, the IRS caps what you pay for the benchmark Silver plan at a share of income, up to 10.22%.
| Household | 100% FPL (subsidies start) | 400% FPL (cliff) |
|---|---|---|
| Single retiree | $15,960 | $63,840 |
| Retired couple | $21,640 | $86,560 |
Your subsidy is based on your estimated 2027 income, and retirement money counts in different ways. Pension payments, taxable IRA or 401(k) withdrawals, and Social Security benefits generally count toward the income the Marketplace uses. Because the cliff is a hard line, the timing of a large withdrawal or a home sale can decide whether you get help. Talk with your tax adviser, then estimate carefully; credits are reconciled on your 2027 tax return.

Turning 65: switching to Medicare the right way
When you become eligible for Medicare, the Marketplace stops being the right place for you. HealthCare.gov is clear on three points (Medicare and the Marketplace):
- Your Initial Enrollment Period lasts 7 months, starting 3 months before the month you turn 65 and ending 3 months after.
- Marketplace coverage does not end automatically when Medicare starts. You must update your application to end it, and you can report your Medicare start date up to 3 months ahead.
- Savings stop once you are eligible for premium-free Part A or your Medicare coverage starts. Keeping tax credits after that can mean paying them back at tax time.
Many Boca couples are a few years apart in age. When one spouse moves to Medicare, the younger spouse can generally keep a Marketplace plan until their own 65th birthday, and the household’s subsidy is recalculated for the person still on it.
Do not double up: Set a reminder for three months before your Medicare start date to end the Marketplace plan for that person. It is one of the most common and costly mistakes for new retirees.

Boca Raton hospitals and specialists
For many residents, the anchor hospital is Boca Raton Regional Hospital, part of Baptist Health South Florida. It is home to the Lynn Cancer Institute and the Marcus Neuroscience Institute, which treats stroke, brain tumors, spine and epilepsy (Baptist Health).
In your fifties and sixties, the specialist network often matters more than the premium. Before you pick health insurance Boca Raton plans offer, check each provider directory for:
- Your cardiologist, oncologist or other specialists, and the hospital where they admit patients.
- Your regular prescriptions on the plan’s drug list, and which tier they sit on.
- Whether the plan is an HMO, EPO or PPO, and what happens if you spend part of the year up north.
Carriers and networks vary by county, and 2027 plan details are not final until plans go live on November 1. Compare every option on HealthCare.gov or with Honesty.
For residents without coverage, the Health Care District of Palm Beach County runs the West Boca health center, a Federally Qualified Health Center on the West Boca Medical Center campus that accepts adult patients with or without insurance, regardless of ability to pay (Health Care District of Palm Beach County).
FAU students and young adults
Boca is also a college town: Florida Atlantic University’s main campus is here. If you are under 26, you can usually stay on a parent’s plan, even if you live on your own or are not a dependent. If your parents are moving to Medicare, though, that option ends, because Medicare has no dependent coverage.
Students and recent grads can shop the Marketplace on their own, using their own income. Adults under 30 may also qualify for a Catastrophic plan. Our guide to choosing a health plan explains the trade-offs.

Frequently asked questions
I retired at 61 in Boca Raton. How do I get health insurance until Medicare?
Most early retirees use a Marketplace plan from HealthCare.gov. Losing job-based coverage opens a Special Enrollment Period, generally 60 days, so you can enroll right away instead of waiting for Open Enrollment. Compare it with COBRA, and check whether your 2027 income qualifies for a premium tax credit.
Does Social Security or IRA income affect my 2027 subsidy?
Yes. Social Security benefits, pensions and taxable IRA or 401(k) withdrawals generally count toward the income the Marketplace uses. For 2027 coverage, a household above 400% of the federal poverty level gets no premium tax credit, so the timing of large withdrawals can matter.
Does my Marketplace plan end automatically when I turn 65?
No. Marketplace coverage does not end automatically when Medicare starts. Update your application to end it for the person starting Medicare; you can report the start date up to 3 months ahead. Savings stop once you are eligible for premium-free Part A, and you may have to repay credits received after that.
My spouse is turning 65 but I am 62. Can I keep my Marketplace plan?
Generally yes. The spouse who becomes eligible for Medicare moves to Medicare, and the younger spouse can keep a Marketplace plan until their own Medicare eligibility. Update your application so the household and subsidy are recalculated for the person still enrolled.
Is Boca Raton Regional Hospital in every Marketplace plan?
Not necessarily. Networks vary by insurer and plan, and 2027 provider directories are not final until plans go live on November 1. Before you enroll, search each plan’s directory for Boca Raton Regional Hospital, your specialists, and your prescriptions.
