Health insurance Bend: only two insurers in Deschutes County
The Division of Financial Regulation’s final 2027 county coverage chart shows two insurers selling individual plans in Deschutes County. That is the minimum in Oregon this year, compared with four in the Portland area.
Explore Health says Moda is not offering plans in Deschutes County or several other central and eastern counties. BridgeSpan and Regence sell statewide, which leaves Bend shoppers choosing between plans from those two companies. When it comes to health insurance, Bend residents have fewer networks to pick from, so checking that your doctors are covered matters even more here.
Prices are also higher. DFR approved individual-market increases averaging 21.6% statewide for 2027. Your own premium depends on your tax credit, so compare with your savings applied. For the statewide picture, read our Oregon health insurance guide.
PacificSource members in Central Oregon: your next step
PacificSource is an Oregon insurer with offices in Bend, and it has been a familiar name on Central Oregon insurance cards. It will not offer any individual coverage in 2027. Providence is leaving the individual market too.
Explore Health says it matched affected members with a plan from another insurer, and that plan may be used for automatic re-enrollment if you don’t choose. A matched plan avoids a coverage gap, but it was not chosen around your doctors or prescriptions. Look at both available insurers before January. The state explains the process on its Explore Health re-enrollment page.
PacificSource’s small-group business continues, so if you get coverage through a small employer, this change may not affect you. Ask your employer if you’re not sure.
Honesty.AI compares both Deschutes County insurers, checks your doctors and applies your tax credit.
Choosing between two insurers in Bend
With only two companies selling in Deschutes County, health insurance Bend decisions come down to networks, metal levels and drug lists more than brand names. A short routine keeps the choice simple.
- Start with your doctors. Search each insurer’s 2027 provider directory for your primary care doctor, any specialists and St. Charles.
- Check where you travel. If you see specialists in Portland or Eugene, confirm those providers are covered too.
- Compare metal levels, not just insurers. At or below 250% of the poverty level, a Silver plan with cost-sharing reductions often beats Bronze on total cost.
- Look up every prescription. Formularies differ between the two companies.
Shopping for health insurance, Bend families sometimes assume fewer choices means less to compare. In practice, each insurer offers several plans across metal levels, so there is still real money and coverage at stake. Our guide on how to choose a health plan explains HMO and PPO differences.
St. Charles and hospital financial assistance
St. Charles Bend, on Northeast Neff Road, is the main hospital for most Bend residents, with a 24-hour emergency department. It is part of the St. Charles Health System that serves Central Oregon. Before you choose a 2027 plan, confirm St. Charles and your St. Charles doctors are in its network.
St. Charles also runs a Financial Assistance Program. It offers discounts to families at or below 400% of the federal poverty guideline, or whose St. Charles balances exceed their annual income, according to its financial assistance page. That can help with a large bill, but it is not health insurance and does not cover care elsewhere.
Mosaic Community Health and county services
Mosaic Community Health runs health centers in Bend, Madras, Prineville and Redmond. It offers a sliding scale discount program, pediatric, adult and senior care, and a pharmacy. Mosaic also gives free one-on-one help with OHP changes, whether or not you are a Mosaic patient.
The county’s public health agency is Deschutes County Health Services, which also runs behavioral health and crisis services. For enrollment, Explore Health’s Local Help Finder lists community assisters and licensed agents who can help in person.
Many Bend households qualify for low-cost public coverage. The Oregon Health Plan covers most adults up to about 138% of the poverty level, and OHP Bridge covers adults 19 to 64 between 133% and 200%. Both accept applications all year.
How to enroll on Explore Health from Bend
Oregon left HealthCare.gov for 2027. Bend residents now shop at Explore Health, run by the Oregon Health Authority. Tax credits and cost-sharing reductions for Oregon individual plans are only available through it.
- Estimate your household’s 2027 income, including net self-employment income.
- Apply on Explore Health or call 855-268-3767. If you look eligible for OHP, your information goes to OHP.
- Compare plans from both Deschutes County insurers, with your tax credit applied.
- Check your doctors, St. Charles coverage and prescriptions in each plan.
- Enroll by December 31, 2026 for a January 1 start.
Note that Oregon insurers are not offering Catastrophic plans for 2027, so younger adults should compare Bronze and Silver plans instead.
Seasonal, remote and self-employed work in Bend
Many Bend jobs are in tourism, outdoor recreation and other seasonal work, and the area is home to plenty of remote and self-employed workers. Many of those jobs don’t come with health benefits, or the income changes by season. That makes the individual market, and OHP programs, especially important here.
If your income swings, estimate as carefully as you can and update Explore Health when it changes. Starting with the 2026 tax year, there is no cap on repaying excess tax credit. Students at OSU-Cascades can usually stay on a parent’s plan until 26, or compare a school option with Explore Health and OHP. Leaving a job with benefits opens a Special Enrollment Period. For many Bend households, choosing coverage starts with how steady next year’s income will be.
Wildfire season and your coverage
Central Oregon’s summers bring wildfire and smoke. Keep your insurance card, plan ID and doctors’ numbers saved on your phone in case you have to evacuate. People with asthma or heart conditions should know their plan’s urgent care and telehealth options before smoke season.
If a disaster forces you to move or you lose coverage because of it, that can open a Special Enrollment Period. Contact Explore Health as soon as you can.
