Two health centers that also help you enroll
Worcester has two federally qualified health centers, and both are listed by the Health Connector as navigator organizations. That means you can get sliding-fee primary care and free enrollment help under the same roof.
- Family Health Center of Worcester at 26 Queen Street describes itself as an FTCA-deemed federally qualified health center open to all residents of Worcester and surrounding areas. The Connector lists enrollment help there in many languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, Vietnamese, Arabic, Albanian and Nepali. It also runs Worcester Health Care for the Homeless.
- Edward M. Kennedy Community Health Center has Worcester sites at 19 Tacoma Street and 605 Lincoln Street, with enrollment help in Spanish and Portuguese, per the Connector’s in-person help directory.
Eligible low-income patients can also use the Health Safety Net to help pay for care at community health centers and hospitals. HRSA’s Find a Health Center tool lists current sites.
Fallon’s 2027 changes in Worcester County
Fallon Health is based in Worcester, and many local families have used it for years. For 2027, the Connector says Fallon will no longer be offered in parts of Worcester County, as well as in Berkshire, Bristol, Norfolk, Plymouth and Suffolk counties and parts of Hampden and Middlesex. Whether you are affected depends on your address.
If your Fallon plan is ending, you should receive a notice. You will be enrolled automatically in the lowest-cost plan at the same level in your area unless you choose a different plan by the Open Enrollment deadline. State regulators also rejected Fallon’s requested 25.7% rate increase for 2027 while approving an average 10.4% across the market, as reported by Becker’s.
Even if Fallon stays in your ZIP code, compare. Other 2027 carriers include Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts, Harvard Pilgrim, Health New England, Mass General Brigham Health Plan, Tufts Health Plan, UnitedHealthcare and WellSense. Availability varies by area.

UMass Memorial and network checks
UMass Memorial Health is the clinical partner of UMass Chan Medical School, and UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester is the region’s academic medical center. Saint Vincent Hospital is the city’s other large hospital. Before choosing health insurance, Worcester patients should confirm both their hospital and their own doctors are in-network for 2027.
This matters more than usual this year. When a carrier leaves an area and members are auto-placed in a new plan, the new network may not include the same specialists. Search each doctor by name in the plan directory and check your prescriptions on the drug list. Our guide on how to choose a health plan walks through it.
ConnectorCare and MassHealth for Worcester families
Many working families buying health insurance in Worcester qualify for state help on top of federal credits. The Connector’s single application checks everything.
- MassHealth, the state’s combined Medicaid and CHIP program, for most adults up to 138% of the poverty level (about $22,025 for one person in 2027).
- ConnectorCare from 100% to 400% of the poverty level: low premiums, low copays and no deductibles, with the same benefits across insurers.
- Federal premium tax credits on other Connector plans up to 400% of the poverty level, or $132,000 for a family of four.
Applications for MassHealth and ConnectorCare are accepted any time of year. Starting January 1, 2027, federal credits and ConnectorCare are limited to green card holders, Cuban and Haitian Entrants and COFA migrants, a change that affects many Worcester immigrant families. Full tables are in our affordable health insurance Massachusetts hub and our 2027 subsidies guide.
Avoiding the state tax penalty
Massachusetts has a state individual mandate. Adults who could afford coverage meeting Minimum Creditable Coverage standards, and go more than three consecutive months without it, can owe a penalty on their state tax return. Income up to 150% of the poverty level is exempt, and the penalty cannot exceed 50% of the minimum monthly premium for qualifying coverage.
Every Connector plan, ConnectorCare plan and MassHealth plan (except MassHealth Limited) meets the standard. If you are between jobs in Worcester, enroll within your 60-day Special Enrollment Period so a gap does not stretch past three months. Rules are on the Connector’s individual mandate page.
A college city: student coverage rules
Worcester is home to several colleges and UMass Chan Medical School. Massachusetts requires students enrolled at 75% or more of a full-time load to enroll in their school’s Student Health Insurance Program or waive it with comparable coverage, such as MassHealth, ConnectorCare or a parent’s plan that covers the school’s area.
Graduating ends school coverage and opens a Special Enrollment Period. With a first salary, many graduates fall within ConnectorCare’s income range.
Public health and local resources
The City of Worcester Division of Public Health says it was the first nationally accredited health department in Massachusetts. It handles community health programs and public health services, not insurance enrollment. For enrollment, use a navigator or the Connector at 1-877-MA-ENROLL.
Leaving a job? When you lose employer health insurance, Worcester workers generally have 60 days to pick a Connector plan through a Special Enrollment Period. Compare a Connector plan with COBRA before you decide: COBRA keeps your old plan, but you usually pay the full premium and cannot combine it with the federal tax credit or ConnectorCare. Starting with 2026 tax returns, there is also no cap on repaying excess advance credit, so report income changes promptly.
