How health insurance in Seattle works for 2027
If you don’t get coverage through a job, Medicare or Apple Health, you buy your own plan. In Seattle that happens on Washington Healthplanfinder, not HealthCare.gov. Federal tax credits and state Cascade Care Savings only apply to plans bought there or through a certified broker or navigator connected to it.
Seattle sits in King County, the state’s most populous county. That means more insurer and network choice than many rural Washington counties have. More choice is good, but it also means more fine print to compare. For the statewide rules and the full insurer list, read our Washington health insurance guide.
Every Healthplanfinder plan covers essential benefits like doctor visits, hospital stays, prescriptions, maternity and mental health care. Insurers cannot deny you or charge more for a pre-existing condition. When comparing health insurance, Seattle shoppers should focus first on networks and second on premiums, for the reasons below.
Free enrollment help from King County
Public Health – Seattle & King County runs an Access & Outreach program with trained navigators. They help residents compare plans, check eligibility for tax credits and reduced cost sharing, and apply for Apple Health. Navigator help is free and must be unbiased.
The county lists enrollment events by region and a help line, 1-800-756-5437, to find the nearest in-person location. Healthplanfinder’s own customer support line is 855-923-4633. Details are on the King County Access & Outreach page.
Bring your birth date, Social Security number if you have one, and an estimate of your 2027 household income. Lawfully present immigrants should bring current immigration documents. Prefer to start at home? Honesty can walk you through the same comparison by chat, voice or text.
Health insurance Seattle networks: hospitals to check first
With health insurance, Seattle plans in King County are often built around specific hospital systems. Two plans at a similar price can include very different doctors, so confirm your doctors, specialists and preferred hospital are in-network for 2027 before you pick.
Systems Seattle residents commonly ask about include:
- Harborview Medical Center, King County’s public hospital, staffed by University of Washington faculty. It is the only Level I trauma center in the five-state WWAMI region (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho), per UW Medicine.
- UW Medical Center and other UW Medicine hospitals and clinics.
- Swedish and Virginia Mason Franciscan Health, large hospital systems with sites across the region.
- Kaiser Permanente Washington, which is both an insurer and a care system, so its plans mostly use its own clinics.
- Seattle Children’s, for families with kids who need pediatric specialists.
We are not ranking carriers or hospitals. Networks change every plan year, and carriers vary by county. Search each plan’s provider directory by doctor name, and see our checklist on how to choose a health plan for HMO, EPO and PPO differences.
Honesty.AI checks networks, applies your tax credit and Cascade Care Savings, and compares every Seattle option.
Community health centers and charity care in Seattle
If you are between plans or underinsured, Seattle has several federally qualified health centers that see patients with or without insurance. They offer sliding-fee discounts and can often help you apply for coverage. They are a good place to keep your primary care while you sort out a plan.
- NeighborCare Health runs clinics across the Seattle area, including same-day and walk-in visits, a sliding fee discount and insurance assistance.
- International Community Health Services (ICHS) serves many Asian Pacific Islander and immigrant families, with help in a long list of languages. Its main line is (206) 788-3700.
- Sea Mar Community Health Centers runs community clinics across western Washington.
Washington’s hospital charity care law also protects Seattle patients. Larger hospitals must provide free care for incomes up to 300% of the poverty level and discounts up to 400%. That helps with a hospital bill, but it does not cover prescriptions or most outside doctors, so it is no substitute for a plan.
Tech, contract work and job changes in Seattle
Seattle has a large share of tech, contract and project-based workers whose income and coverage change often. Losing job-based coverage opens a Special Enrollment Period, generally for 60 days. Leaving a job is the most common reason a Seattle resident ends up shopping mid-year.
Before you take COBRA, compare it with a Healthplanfinder plan. COBRA keeps your old network, but you usually pay the full premium with no tax credit. A subsidized plan may cost less, especially if your 2027 income will drop. If you start freelancing, estimate net income after business expenses, and update Healthplanfinder when it changes. Starting with the 2026 tax year, there is no cap on paying back excess credit.
Moving into Seattle from another state also opens a Special Enrollment Period. Our Special Enrollment Period guide lists the qualifying events.
Immigrant families in Seattle: 2027 changes
From January 1, 2027, federal premium tax credits are limited to lawful permanent residents, Cuban and Haitian entrants and COFA migrants. Other lawfully present immigrants can still buy a plan, but without the federal credit. This is a federal change that applies in every state.
Washington softens the blow. Healthplanfinder says people of any immigration status who qualify by income can still receive state-funded Cascade Care Savings, which is available up to 250% of the poverty level on Cascade Care Silver and Gold plans. A clinic like ICHS or a King County navigator can help you apply in your language.
A five-step health insurance Seattle checklist
Use this short list before the December 31 deadline. It keeps the decision focused on what changes your real cost.
- Estimate 2027 income. Include wages, net self-employment income, unemployment and retirement withdrawals.
- Screen for Apple Health first. If your household is near 138% of the poverty level, apply; it is open all year.
- List your must-keep doctors and hospital. Then search each plan’s directory for them by name.
- Compare Cascade Care Silver and Gold. Under 250% of the poverty level, these are the plans that carry state savings.
- Check prescriptions. Look up each drug on the plan’s formulary.
Shopping for health insurance, Seattle families often stop after step one and auto-renew. With Washington’s approved 2027 rates up 22.2% on average, according to the Washington Health Benefit Exchange, a fresh comparison is worth the time.
