For individual and family health insurance, Jackson residents in Hinds, Rankin and Madison counties use the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov. Open Enrollment runs Nov 1, 2026 – Jan 15, 2027. Mississippi did not expand Medicaid, so subsidies start at 100% FPL, and Cigna and Molina members must pick a new plan for 2027.

Cigna and Molina members in Jackson: act by December 15
If your 2026 Marketplace plan is from Cigna or Molina, it won’t continue in 2027. Cigna is leaving the individual market in all its states, and Molina is leaving Mississippi’s individual market.
Both exits are reported in the KFF 2027 insurer tracker and ACASignups’ 2027 Mississippi filings review. HealthCare.gov may try to move you to a similar plan, but don’t rely on that: pick a plan yourself by December 15, 2026 so coverage starts January 1. Check that your Jackson doctors are in the new plan’s network before you switch. Our Open Enrollment 2027 guide explains how plan changes work.
UMMC and other Jackson hospitals: check the network
When you compare health insurance, Jackson residents should check networks first: the city is Mississippi’s hospital hub, and the hospitals a plan includes matter as much as its premium. Before you compare price, list the hospitals and doctors you need and check each 2027 plan’s directory.
- University of Mississippi Medical Center: the state’s only academic medical center, with Mississippi’s only Level I trauma center and only children’s hospital.
- Mississippi Baptist Medical Center, part of Baptist Memorial Health Care, on North State Street.
- FMOL Health St. Dominic.
If a family member needs pediatric specialty care or trauma follow-up, UMMC’s network status can decide your plan. We don’t rank carriers or hospitals; carriers and networks vary by county, and the final 2027 listings appear when HealthCare.gov opens window shopping. Our guide to choosing a plan explains HMO and PPO differences.
Subsidies and the coverage gap in Hinds County
Because Mississippi did not expand Medicaid, Jackson adults with income from 100% to 400% of the poverty level can get a premium tax credit, while most adults below 100% can’t get Medicaid or a credit.
For 2027, 100% FPL is $15,960 for one person and $33,000 for a family of four; 400% is $63,840 and $132,000. Under IRS rules, a household under 133% FPL is expected to pay 2.15% of income for the benchmark Silver plan, rising to 10.22% between 300% and 400% FPL. Silver plans with cost-sharing reductions lower deductibles for incomes up to 250% FPL. See our 2027 subsidies guide for examples.
Self-employed people, gig drivers and small-business owners often buy their own health insurance. Jackson-area freelancers should estimate net self-employment income for 2027 (after business expenses), since that, not gross receipts, is what the Marketplace uses. If your income is uneven, update your application during the year to avoid a surprise at tax time.
Children are often covered even when parents aren’t. Mississippi Medicaid and CHIP cover kids at higher income levels than adults, and you can apply through the Division of Medicaid’s Access MS portal or by listing the whole family on HealthCare.gov. Parents above 100% FPL can then enroll in a subsidized Marketplace plan while the children get Medicaid or CHIP.
If you fall below 100% FPL, UMMC offers financial assistance for eligible patients; call (601) 815-9430 or visit the Health Care Benefit Office on North State Street. That’s help with a bill, not health insurance.
Honesty.AI checks your subsidy, confirms UMMC or Baptist is in-network and compares every plan in the Jackson metro.
Community health centers in Jackson
Whether or not you have health insurance, Jackson community health centers will see you. These federally qualified health centers charge on a sliding fee scale. Many also have staff who help you apply for Medicaid, CHIP or a Marketplace plan.
- Jackson-Hinds Comprehensive Health Center, with its main site on West Northside Drive plus a Jackson Medical Mall site, school clinics and mobile units.
- Central Mississippi Health Services, on Winter Street.
Find every location near you with HRSA’s Find a Health Center. A health center can be your primary-care home whether you have Medicaid, a Marketplace plan or no coverage yet.
State jobs, JSU and Millsaps: special situations
As the capital, Jackson has many state and school employees. They’re usually covered by the Mississippi State and School Employees’ Life and Health Insurance Plan, which covers more than 197,000 people.
If you’re offered that coverage, the Marketplace checks whether it’s affordable. For 2027, an offer is unaffordable if it costs more than 10.22% of household income: employee-only cost for the worker, family cost for spouses and children. Only then can you get a premium tax credit instead. Students at Jackson State University and Millsaps College under 26 can usually stay on a parent’s plan; those with low income should check Medicaid categories and Marketplace subsidies. Graduates losing a parent’s or school’s coverage get a 60-day Special Enrollment Period.
Storms, water outages and enrollment in Jackson
Emergencies can make it hard to keep or use your health insurance. Jackson has lived through several that disrupted daily life. FEMA issued emergency declaration EM-3582 for the 2022 Mississippi water crisis in Hinds County, and spring storms can bring tornadoes to central Mississippi.
If a FEMA-declared disaster in your county keeps you from enrolling or changing plans, HealthCare.gov allows a Special Enrollment Period for 60 days after the incident period ends. Keep photos of your insurance cards and your plan’s member services number on your phone.

Frequently asked questions
My Jackson Marketplace plan is from Molina. What should I do?
Molina is leaving Mississippi’s individual market after 2026, so your plan won’t continue. Choose a new 2027 plan on HealthCare.gov or with a licensed agency by December 15, 2026 so coverage starts January 1, and confirm your doctors are in its network.
Is UMMC in every Marketplace plan in Jackson?
Not necessarily. Networks differ by plan and change every year. If you need UMMC, including its children’s hospital, search each 2027 plan’s provider directory before you enroll.
Can I get a subsidy in Jackson if I earn under the poverty level?
Usually not. Mississippi has not expanded Medicaid, and premium tax credits start at 100% of the federal poverty level. Adults below that line who don’t fit a Medicaid category can use community health centers and hospital financial assistance, such as UMMC’s.
I’m a state employee’s spouse. Can I buy a Marketplace plan with a subsidy?
Only if the family coverage offered through the state plan is unaffordable for 2027, meaning it costs more than 10.22% of household income. Otherwise you can still buy a Marketplace plan, but without a premium tax credit.
Where is the Hinds County Health Department?
It’s in the Jackson Medical Mall at 350 W. Woodrow Wilson, Suite 411. The phone number is 601-364-2666.
