For health insurance, Daytona Beach residents without a job-based plan, Medicare, or Medicaid enroll through the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov. 2027 Open Enrollment runs Nov 1, 2026 – Jan 15, 2027; finish by Dec 15 for coverage on Jan 1. Hospitality and gig workers should base the subsidy on a realistic full-year 2027 income.

Health insurance Daytona Beach: who needs a plan here
Daytona Beach sits on the Atlantic coast of Volusia County, and its economy runs on visitors. Volusia County’s 2024 tourism study counted 4.5 million overnight visitors and 39,900 leisure and hospitality employees (Economic Impact of Tourism on Volusia County, 2024). Hotel, restaurant, and event jobs often come without a health plan, or with one that costs too much, so many workers buy their own coverage.
Add three colleges, a steady flow of retirees, and the self-employed contractors who work race weeks and beach season, and many people here buy their own coverage. Florida uses HealthCare.gov, so the rules below apply whether you enroll alone or with help. For statewide basics, see our Florida health insurance guide.
Hospitality, race-week and gig workers
Local tourism marketing bills Daytona International Speedway as the “World Center of Racing,” and its big event weeks bring bursts of temporary and freelance work. That pattern makes Marketplace math tricky, because your 2027 subsidy depends on your whole-year income, not one busy month.
- Add up all expected 2027 income. Include wages, tips, side gigs, and self-employment profit after business expenses.
- Use a middle estimate. Too low and you may repay part of the credit at tax time; too high and you pay more each month than you need to.
- Update when things change. Report a new job, lost hours, or a raise on HealthCare.gov so your credit adjusts.
- Check employer offers. For 2027, job-based coverage counts as unaffordable if your share for self-only coverage is more than 10.22% of household income, which may make you eligible for Marketplace savings.
Self-employed? Your Marketplace income is generally your net self-employment income. Our guide to affordable health insurance covers more ways to keep costs in check.
Embry-Riddle, Bethune-Cookman and Daytona State students
Daytona Beach is a college town as well as a beach town, and students often shop for their own health insurance. Daytona Beach schools set different rules:
- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University requires all enrolled students to have health insurance. Students with comparable coverage can request a waiver from the school-sponsored plan during the waiver period, per Embry-Riddle. If you plan to waive with a Marketplace plan, confirm with the school that it meets the waiver rules.
- Bethune-Cookman University, the historically Black university founded by Mary McLeod Bethune in 1904, and Daytona State College, whose main campus is on International Speedway Boulevard, enroll many working and commuting students.
Students can stay on a parent’s plan until 26, even if they live on their own. If parents claim you as a tax dependent, your Marketplace household and subsidy are tied to theirs. Students who file on their own can apply as their own household. Under-30s may also consider a Catastrophic plan, which has high deductibles and no premium tax credit.
Honesty estimates your 2027 income, applies your subsidy, and compares every plan.
Daytona Beach hospitals and networks
Volusia County lists two full-service hospitals in Daytona Beach: AdventHealth Daytona Beach at 301 Memorial Medical Parkway and Halifax Health Medical Center at 303 North Clyde Morris Boulevard (Volusia County hospital list). Halifax Health also operates other hospitals in the county.
With two large systems side by side, plans may include one and not the other, and doctors usually follow their hospital. Before choosing health insurance, Daytona Beach families should look up the hospital they would use, their primary care doctor, any specialists, and each prescription in the plan’s directory and drug list. Emergency care is covered regardless of network. Our guide on how to choose a health plan explains network types.
Insurer changes for 2027
Cigna is leaving the Florida Marketplace after December 31, 2026, and Sunshine State Health Plan’s Marketplace products are being discontinued. If you are enrolled in either, coverage lasts through December 31, 2026; choose a 2027 plan by December 15 to avoid a gap. See our Florida page for details.
Prices are also moving. KFF reports insurers proposed a median 15% increase for 2027, the second straight year of double-digit hikes. Carriers and networks vary by county; compare every option on HealthCare.gov or with Honesty instead of auto-renewing.
2027 subsidies and the coverage gap
The enhanced premium tax credits of 2021–2025 expired December 31, 2025. For 2027 the credit still exists, but the 400% “subsidy cliff” is back. This table shows how much of your income you are expected to put toward the benchmark silver plan:
| Income as % of poverty level | Your expected share of income (2027) |
|---|---|
| Under 133% | 2.15% |
| 133–150% | 3.23% – 4.30% |
| 150–200% | 4.30% – 6.78% |
| 200–250% | 6.78% – 8.66% |
| 250–300% | 8.66% – 10.22% |
| 300–400% | 10.22% |
| Over 400% | No subsidy |
The poverty line for 2027 coverage is $15,960 for one person and $33,000 for a family of four; 400% is $63,840 and $132,000. Silver plans also get cost-sharing reductions under 250% of poverty, and every plan caps in-network out-of-pocket costs at $12,000 for one person and $24,000 for a family. Details: 2027 health insurance subsidies.
Florida has not expanded Medicaid, so adults under 100% of poverty with no other eligibility can fall in the coverage gap. Apply for Medicaid through ACCESS Florida, and check Florida KidCare for children under 19.
Hurricanes and Special Enrollment
Volusia County was approved for FEMA Individual Assistance after Hurricane Ian in 2022 (disaster DR-4673). When a storm closes hotels and cancels events, paychecks and job-based coverage can vanish with them.
Losing coverage opens a 60-day Special Enrollment Period. If a FEMA-declared emergency kept you from enrolling, HealthCare.gov gives you extra time after the incident period. Save a photo of your insurance card and member ID on your phone before hurricane season.
