Updated for the 2027 plan year (October 2026)

Health insurance Charlotte residents can buy for 2027

Charlotte sits in Mecklenburg County, and like the rest of North Carolina it uses the federal Marketplace at HealthCare.gov. Open Enrollment for 2027 coverage runs November 1, 2026 through January 15, 2027. Enroll by December 15, 2026 for coverage starting January 1; enrollments from December 16 to January 15 start February 1.

The plans offered in Mecklenburg County come from private insurers. Statewide, five insurers filed 2027 individual rates with the NC Department of Insurance, and Cigna is leaving the individual market after 2026. Which of them sell in your ZIP code shows up when you shop.

The county’s own numbers show why that matters. Mecklenburg County Public Health’s 2026 Access to Care report found the uninsured rate fell from 12.1% in 2019 to 10.9% in 2024, largely because of Medicaid expansion, which still left roughly 130,000 residents without coverage. For statewide rules, see our North Carolina health insurance guide.

Atrium Health, Novant Health and your network

Two large systems dominate hospital care in Charlotte: Atrium Health, whose flagship is Carolinas Medical Center on Blythe Boulevard, and Novant Health, whose flagship is Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center on Hawthorne Lane. Your doctors almost certainly practice inside one of them, so for health insurance Charlotte shoppers, the network is often the most important line on a plan.

Before you choose a 2027 plan, search the plan’s provider directory for your primary care doctor, any specialists and the hospital you would want in an emergency. Check pediatricians and OB-GYNs separately if you have children or are planning a pregnancy. A plan that leaves out your system can cost far more than a slightly higher premium.

Charlotte network tip: make a short list of must-keep doctors and prescriptions, then compare every plan’s network and drug list against it. Honesty.AI can run that check across all Mecklenburg County plans in one conversation.

Bank, corporate and job-change coverage in Charlotte

Charlotte is a major banking and health care employment center. A HUD market analysis lists Atrium Health, Wells Fargo and Bank of America as the area’s largest employers, and most health insurance Charlotte workers have comes through an employer like these. That job-based coverage shapes your Marketplace options.

If your employer offers coverage that meets minimum value and the employee-only premium is no more than 10.22% of household income in 2027, you generally can’t get a premium tax credit for yourself. Your spouse and children are tested on the cost of family coverage, so they may still qualify on HealthCare.gov.

Layoffs and job changes are where Charlotte residents most often need individual coverage. Losing job-based coverage opens a 60-day Special Enrollment Period, so you don’t have to wait for Open Enrollment. Compare COBRA’s full cost with a subsidized Marketplace plan before you elect it, because your expected income for the rest of the year may qualify you for a credit.

Living near the South Carolina line

The Charlotte metro spills into South Carolina, and many people live on one side of the line and work on the other. Marketplace coverage follows where you live, not where you work, so a household in York or Lancaster County shops South Carolina plans even if every paycheck comes from an uptown Charlotte office. In other words, the health insurance Charlotte commuters can buy depends on their home state.

Medicaid is different on each side too. North Carolina expanded Medicaid to adults up to 138% of poverty; South Carolina has not. If you move across the state line, that move opens a Special Enrollment Period, and your plan choices, networks and Medicaid eligibility can all change. If that applies to you, see our South Carolina health insurance guide too.

NC Medicaid in Mecklenburg County

Adults 19 to 64 earning up to 138% of poverty, which is $22,025 for one person or $45,540 for a family of four, can qualify for NC Medicaid. You can apply any time online through ePASS or at the Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services.

Starting January 1, 2027, most expansion adults will need to show 80 hours a month of work, school or volunteering, or monthly earnings equal to 80 hours at the federal minimum wage, unless exempt, and will renew every six months, according to NC Medicaid. Parents of children under 14, people with disabilities and pregnant women are among those exempt.

The county report also found that 45% to 46% of Medicaid members had no primary care visit in the prior year. If you have Medicaid, picking a primary care provider and getting a yearly checkup is one of the easiest ways to use it well.

Clinics and financial assistance for uninsured Charlotte residents

The health insurance Charlotte families rely on sometimes lapses, and the city has a solid safety net for people between jobs, waiting for coverage or caught in the gap. None of these replaces insurance, but each can lower what you pay for care while you sort out a plan.

  • C.W. Williams Community Health Center: a federally qualified health center with locations on Wilkinson Boulevard and Old Pineville Road, offering primary care, dental, pharmacy and behavioral health.
  • Charlotte Community Health Clinic: medical, dental and behavioral care, with an income-based discount program for uninsured patients.
  • NC MedAssist: a free pharmacy for uninsured North Carolina residents with household income below 300% of poverty.
  • Atrium Health financial assistance: Atrium’s policy offers full assistance at or below 300% of the federal poverty guidelines and partial assistance from 301% to 400%.
  • Novant Health financial assistance: Novant publishes its own policy for North Carolina hospitals; ask the billing office before you pay a large bill.

Mecklenburg County Public Health keeps a current free and low-cost clinic directory.

UNC Charlotte students and young adults

UNC Charlotte enrolled a record 32,207 students in fall 2025, and many of them, along with recent graduates starting their first jobs, need to sort out their own health insurance. Charlotte’s young adults have several routes.

  • You can stay on a parent’s plan until age 26, even if you live on your own.
  • If your income is low, check NC Medicaid before buying a plan.
  • Under age 30, a catastrophic plan is an option, though the premium tax credit can’t be used on it.
  • Turning 26 or losing student coverage opens a Special Enrollment Period.

Low-income students often qualify for a premium tax credit that makes a Bronze or Silver plan cheaper than a catastrophic one. Our 2027 subsidies guide explains how the credit is calculated.
